In the wake of Mac Miller’s tragic death, many have been attempting to keep his legacy alive in various ways. An effort by a journalist, however, has been denounced by the late rapper’s estate.
Paul Cantor is reportedly in the process of putting together a Miller biography titled Most Dope: The Extraordinary Life Of Mac Miller. As the book is slated to drop on January 18, Miller’s estate released a statement telling fans that the upcoming project was “not authorized or endorsed by Miller’s family.” According to the message, Cantor had no relationship with the Swimming star and “no meaningful access to those that were closest to” him.
Despite being told that Miller’s loved ones were ”uncomfortable” with his biography, Cantor continued on despite their “polite insistence that he not do disservice to Malcolm’s legacy through writing a book without legitimate primary sources.”
The estate shared their beliefs that Cantor was attempting to confuse fans and benefit from the announcement of the Book of Mac, a forthcoming biography by journalist Donna Claire Chesman that “does have the support of the estate and includes extensive exclusive interviews with the people Malcolm held dear.”
The statement also addresses Cantor’s release date, which is one day after Miller’s birthday. “We have been consistently disappointed by the author and the publisher’s decision to pursue this book given their full understanding of our discomfort with the circumstances under which it was authored, but utilizing Malcolm’s birthdate as a marketing tool is exploitative and incredibly disappointing,” the note read.
It concluded with the estate asking fans to refrain from purchasing the book.
Miller passed away from an accidental overdose on Sept. 7, 2018 His story will be told in Chesman’s book, which will come out in October.
“From Year of Mac to Book of Mac, it’s been an incredible journey documenting Malcolm’s music and legacy,” wrote Chesman. “Thank you to the 30-plus people I interviewed, to the family and to the fans for trusting me with this story. This one’s for you.”
