Last night, hip hop as a whole tuned in to the latest “Verzuz” episode, which saw longtime collaborators Method Man and Redman celebrating their decades-long contribution to the culture. Just prior to the event, Redman blessed his fans with “80 Barz,” a literal obliteration of his and Chris Pinset’s nostalgic instrumental filled with the kind of off-the-wall lyrics that made the New Jersey emcee the legend that he is today:
“I was a big deal when MJ dated Brooke Shields, now I’m equipped to go Bushwick for the bills, that boy I’m the red button, don’t press me, and I’m a fucked up dad the way I dead beats, let’s see why I’m Bebe bad, condoms in the Jacuzzi, I’m Day-Day’s dad/
I used to wanna hit JJ Fad, now I motivate I’m runnin’ with a Gary Vee kind of heart rate, no excuses, my juice runnin’ like I’m retaliating for my ancestor nooses, I want pockets fatter than Bruce Bruce’s/”
The accompanying visual keeps the spotlight on Redman’s bars, as he performs the track in a warehouse filled with colorful lights and a wall full of television screens. The man clearly hasn’t lost a step with his craft.
While he did deliver his 3 Joints EP last year, it’s been six years since Redman liberated his eighth studio LP Mudface, a 13-track offering that saw additional appearances from Josh Gannet, Stressmatic, Runt Dog, and Ready Roc. The project also featured production from the likes of Rockwilder, Mike & Keys, Rick Rock, Jahlil Beats, !llmind, and — of course — the Funk Doc himself. Currently, he’s said to be working on Muddy Waters Too, the official sequel to the 1996 classic Muddy Waters. To date, fans have heard what’s presumed to be singles from that forthcoming effort — “I Love Hip Hop” and “YA!,” both of which made landfall in 2018.
