April Fools’ Day started with a joke aimed at JAY-Z fans. The rap mogul’s name began trending on Twitter this morning (April 1) as fans passed around a tracklist allegedly for his next album.
NotJustOk and Charts Africa reported that Hov was gearing up to release an Africa-themed album called Ascension that would feature several major African artists.
“JAY-Z coming out with his Ascension album featuring all the top rappers in Africa,” Charts Africa tweeted.
The stacked tracklist included 16 songs and collaborations with H.E.R., Beyoncé, Rick Ross and more, as well as African artists like Sarkodie, Femi Kuti, Olamide and Nasty C.
In their report, NotJustOk said Ascension would receive an exclusive opening weekend release on TIDAL and even included a purported statement from Hov about the record.
“I’ve always wanted to get in touch with my roots and connect to the motherland. You know, Africa is blessed with so much talent and I felt like it was time to tap into that resource,” the statement read. “The Ascension is not just talking or focusing on Africa but it’s also about me giving back to the people, familiarizing with the culture and connecting more with the motherland.”
However, while fans quickly got excited about the “surprise” upcoming album from Hov, NotJustOk concluded their report with, “As much as we hope JAY-Z collaborates with African acts in the future… we just want to say Happy April Fool’s Day.”
On Twitter, some fans poked holes in the joke while others were determined to believe it was true.
“Why would JAY-Z name his album Ascension? Why would JAY-Z leak such a bootleg version of his upcoming album? Ahh these bloggers would bleed today,” one person wrote.
“Imagine if the JAY-Z Ascension album starts off being an April Fool’s joke, which turns out to be real that would be epic and crazy good marketing,” another wrote.
So far, JAY has not responded to the reports. See the album’s purported tracklist and reactions on Twitter below.
