Next month will mark the four year anniversary of Kendrick Lamar’s triple platinum album Damn. Surely, fans could not fathom it would take this long for the Compton rapper to release another project. But here we are, three months into 2021 and while his peers are prepping new releases, no one is quite sure when Kendrick will return.

So when Kid Cudi tweeted, “Miss u Kendrick’’ Saturday (March 20), we felt that. Cudi shared a series of tweets with Kendrick’s lyrics on “Solo Dolo, Part II.” It’s the only proper collaboration the two have.

Kendrick hasn’t gone completely ghost, though, as he’s appeared on several songs since his last album. In 2018, he produced, curated and rapped on five songs featured on the Black Panther soundtrack, including the anthem “All the Stars” with SZA. He also made it onto “Mona Lisa” off Lil Wayne’s Carter V album.

In 2019, Kendrick popped up on plenty of songs, including fellow TDE artist Sir’s “Hair Down,” “Rearview” with Raphael Saadiq, 2Chainz’ “Momma I Hit a Lick,” “Nile” off Beyoncé’s The Lion King: The Gift album, and “Under the Sun” off Dreamville’s compilation album. In 2020, Busta Rhymes brought the good kid back for a song featured on his album, titled “Look Over Your Shoulder.”

A year ago Kendrick cryptically tweeted a graphic logo and a link to his service company for artists pgLang. Unfortunately, there was no album when fans clicked the link but as a consolation prize, Baby Keem rapped on an ad the new company produced.

At the end of last year, Kendrick appeared on i-D magazine’s 40th anniversary issue — alongside Baby Keem. Apparently, Kendrick was supposed to put an album out last year, but it got pushed back due to the pandemic. He also revealed why he takes his time on his albums. “I spend the whole year just thinking about how I’m gonna execute a new sound, I can’t do the same thing over and over. I need something to get me excited.”
