Georgia high school teacher Susan McCoy is in hot water over statements blaming Breonna Taylor for her own death during a virtual high school class. In a video, that has since gone viral, the teacher can be heard making comments about Taylor’s death during a Zoom call with her students on Friday. The Pebblebrook High School forensic science teacher shared her thoughts, stating Breonna Taylor was ultimately responsible for her own demise. She suggested Taylor’s associations with dangerous people led to her death.
What to Know About Breonna Taylor’s Death
“She was hanging out with the guy who was wanted on charges,” she said. “I’m sorry she was killed, but you know when you hang out with people with guns and shooting, you’re likely to get crossfire,” she continued, referring to the 26-year-old as “what’s her name— Breonna something— the woman who was killed in the gunfire from the cops.”
Several students could be heard offering rebuttal to the teacher’s incorrect statement, stating it was actually Taylor’s ex-boyfriend facing charges, and he was not at the apartment during the failed drug raid. The teacher offered remorse, but maintained her stance on the topic. The video abruptly ends when another students says, “Alright, let’s talk about science.”
Susan McCoy has since posted a video apologizing for her offensive and racist comments, but also said, “All I can do is say I’m so sorry. I should never have talked about something that I didn’t understand and I truly, truly apologize and ask for forgiveness and hope that someday I can have that trust back with my students that I know that I lost,” she stated. Cobb County School District officials released an official statement saying it is “aware of the allegations, is investigating, and will follow any relevant District policy.”
Breonna Taylor was killed early last March as she slept in her Louisville, Kentucky apartment. The police broke the door as they entered, prompting Taylor’s boyfriend, Kenneth Walker, to fire his gun. Walker thought intruders were entering the home when the no-knock warrant was served. Officers fired back, striking Taylor multiple times. She was pronounced dead on the scene.
