As the days progress, more developments about the storming of the U.S. Capitol by pro-Trump rioters are continuing to unfold. Today (Jan. 11), we learned that two Capitol Police officers have lost their jobs due to their alleged involvement with the violent attack at the government building.
CNN reported this new update. “I know that there were two people that were suspended. One was the selfie officer and another was an officer that put a MAGA hat on that started directing some people around,” House Appropriations Subcommittee Chair Rep. Tim Ryan said during a press call.
The lawmaker also admitted that about 10 to 15 other Capitol Police officers are now under investigation for their suspicious behavior during the Jan. 6 riots. However, he Ryan did not elaborate on any further details such as if their jobs are at risk — or soon will be — as well. The politician also did not talk much about the arrested cop.
The Black officers at the Capitol recently spoke about their horrible experience with the rioters. In an interview with Buzzfeed, two of them anonymously recalled the ordeal.
“You have the nerve to be holding a Blue Lives Matter flag, and you are out there fucking us up,” one officer said about the rioters. “[One guy] pulled out his badge and he said, ‘We’re doing this for you.’ Another guy had his badge. So I was like, ‘Well, you gotta be kidding.’”
They added that their bosses were no help when they were getting verbally abused — even being called niggers. “Our chief was nowhere to be found, I didn’t hear him on the radio,” the Black officer said. “One of our other deputy chiefs was not there. You don’t think it’s all hands on deck?”
A Black Capitol Policeman Eugene Goodman has since been hailed as a hero for navigating the angry mob away from the entrance of the senate floor and their intended targets: senators who were certifying President-elect Joe Biden’s election win.
