Over the weekend, we got some devastating news that Keyshia Cole and Ashanti’s highly anticipated Verzuz wouldn’t be taking place after months of hoping that the two R&B queens would duke it out on the IG Live series. However, now we’re getting some exciting news because it’s just been announced that West coast hip hop legends Too $hort and E-40 will be closing out the year with the last Verzuz of 2020.
On Saturday (Dec. 12), Ashanti revealed that her and Cole’s showdown had to be canceled because she caught Coronavirus and didn’t want to put anyone who would be around her at risk of also contracting it. “Hey y’all. I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I tested positive for COVID-19. I’m OK and not in any pain. I’m actually down to do the Verzuz from my house…we’re trying to figure it out!!!” she wrote in a post. She would soon hop on IG Live with her would-be opponent Cole to talk about the cancelation.
Verzuz’s official account would later declare the new date of their battle to be Saturday Jan. 9. Its statement read: “Unfortunately, we have to postpone tonight’s @Ashanti vs @KeyshiaCole #VERZUZ. Ashanti tested positive for COVID-19 beforehand, and we cannot put anyone at risk in the process. First time this has struck us so close to showtime. We apologize to our incredible audience! Get well soon, Ashanti. Wear a mask, stay inside, and take COVID-19 seriously. It’s truly affecting our community.”
Thankfully, we have Too $hort and E-40’s Verzuz to look forward to as we leave 2020 – what a hard year it’s been! – behind us and go into 2021. The two pioneers are set to go head to head this Saturday (Dec. 19) at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT.
Let’s end Verzuz and 2020 with a bang!
