In The Notorious B.I.G.’s 1994 song “Just Playing (Dreams),” the Brooklyn native shared his desires to sleep with the likes of Tina Turner and Toni Braxton, but his mention of the 90s R&B group Xscape wasn’t as friendly as he declared, “I’ll fuck RuPaul before I fuck them ugly ass Xscape bitches.”
A beef resulted and tension lingered between the singers and the “Hypnotize” emcee. Biggie reportedly reached out to the group on several occasions in an attempt to apologize, but they weren’t open to having a conversation with him.
“There was a couple of times after the ‘Dreams’ song that we had a couple of shows, and Jermaine [Dupri] would be like, ‘Yo, Biggie wants to see y’all. He wants to talk to y’all.’ And, you know, some of the girls were like, ‘No,’” Tiny Harris explained during an interview with DJ Vlad. “I just remember us not wanting to deal with him. Not wanting to talk to him.”
One night, however, Xscape ran into the rapper at a Vibe party. Despite resistance from some members of the group, he had the chance to right his wrongs and express his regret for dissing the “Understanding” singers.
“Someone came to us, and said Biggie wanted to speak to us. Kandi [Burruss] was like, ‘I’m not going over there. I don’t wanna talk to him.’ So I was just like, ‘I’ll go over there.’ So I went,” Tiny explained before detailing the rapper’s apology.
“He basically apologized for saying that, that he thought we were beautiful,” she continued. “He was like, ‘I’m an ugly motherfucker, and I ain’t had no business talking about nobody,’ you know. We laughed and we hugged or whatever, and it was all good.” Unbeknowst to her, it would be their final conversation as the rapper was shot and killed a half hour later in a drive-by shooting.
