It’s official! After long 2020 presidency campaigns — and an even longer 2020 full of ups and downs — Former Vice President Joe Biden will now become the 46th president of the United States of America. The Democrat was named president-elect by CNN and ABC after a victory in Pennsylvania put him over 270 electoral votes.

The President-elect reacted to the news with a statement on Twitter on Saturday (Nov. 7). “America, I’m honored that you have chosen me to lead our great country,” Biden shared. “The work ahead of us will be hard, but I promise you this: I will be a President for all Americans — whether you voted for me or not. I will keep the faith that you have placed in me.”

This win means that Trump will be a one-term president and Biden is now named the president-elect. It’s only happened a handful of times when a president, who was already in office, ran for a second term and lost. So, this win is monumental in a number of ways. On top of that, multiple outlets confirmed Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden officially beat Former President Barack Obama’s record of receiving the most popular votes in American history.

While speaking to his supporters on Wednesday (Nov. 4) afternoon, as the world continued to wait for the final election results, Biden gave some encouraging words. “Yesterday, once again proved that democracy is the heartbeat of this nation,” he began. “If we had any doubts, we shouldn’t have any longer about a government of, by and for the people…It’s clear that we’re winning enough states to reach 270 electoral votes. I am not here to declare that we’ve won. But I am here to report when the count is finished, we believe we will be the winners.”

Biden added that he and Kamala Harris were “on track to win more votes than any previous presidential and vice presidential ticket.” “Every vote must be counted. No one’s going to take our democracy away from us. Not now, not ever,” he continued.

In her final push to get Americans to vote for Biden, Former First Lady Michelle Obama said: “Joe has lived his life guided by values and principles that mirror ones that most Americans can recognize. It is that spirit and determination that will make Joe the kind of president we need right now. One who will continue to put the needs of the country before his own, who will get our economy back on track and will ensure that all families can get back on their feet.”
