Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has won a second term in Congress. The Associated Press reported that Congresswoman Cortez won her first bid for re-election to United House of Representatives in New York’s 14th Congressional District. She was named the winner on Tuesday (Nov. 3) against her Republican challenger and former New York Police Department officer, John Cummings.

She also ran against former CNBC anchor Michelle Caruso-Cabrera, who ran on the Serve America Movement Party line after she lost the Democratic primary race in June. Cummings, who is also a former Catholic school teacher teacher, had a well-funded campaign but Ocasio-Cortez has been the favorite in New York City and her Democratic district, which spans across Northern Queens and parts of The Bronx.

Ocasio-Cortez beat Caruso-Cabrera and two other challengers to win the Democratic nomination for her seat, bringing her closer to winning her first re-election bid. Cortez won the seat in November 2018 with nearly 80 percent of the vote.

She defeated Republican opponent Anthony Pappas in the general election. Ocasio-Cortez was 29 years old at the time and became the youngest woman ever to serve in the United States Congress.

Cory Booker scored a win in New Jersey as well. The former mayor of the state’s largest city and onetime Democratic presidential candidate, scored a second U.S. Senate term over a Republican. New Jersey has not sent a Republican to the U.S. Senate since 1972.

He ran against Rik Mehta, a pharmaceutical entrepreneur and political newcomer. According to the Associated Press, Booker had 61% of the vote while Mehta had 38%. Booker ended his 2020 presidential campaign in January, after failing to qualify for a candidates’ debate.
