Over the summer, the a quartet of skilled artists at the intersection of jazz, hip-hop, and soul formed a group called Dinner Party. This group consists of Terrace Martin, Kamasi Washington, Robert Glasper, and 9th Wonder, all banding together to gift listeners with their Dinner Party project. On “Freeze Tag” song, Cordae uses his guest feature to rap an introspective verse about the reality of his life:
“I was searchin’ through my archives, reminiscin’, car rides. Thinkin’ ‘bout how far I had come since a small fry. Fortunately I lost ties with n***as that had crossed sides. Unforgivin’, creates the vision like Apartheid. Thinkin’ ‘bout my past life, my current one is all eyes. Addicted to the fast life, Porsches with the frog eyes. N***as ask me how I do it, boy, I said ‘It’s all God.’ The funny thing about this life sh*t is that we all die. Hopin’ for Heaven although we closer to Hell.”
The new version of the “Freeze Tag” track actually appears on Dinner Party: Dessert, which essentially is just a revamped version of the initial project listeners enjoyed in the summer. The project consists of the same seven songs, but now have been boosted with features from names like Snoop Dogg, Herbie Hancock, Rapsody, Cordae, Bilal, Tank And The Bangas, Punch, Alex Isley, Reuben Vincent, Buddy, and Malaya.
Being a young rapper working with musical legends is nothing new to Cordae, as he’s received co-signs from several OG’s early on in his career, such as one from Dr. Dre. In a previous interview, Cordae delves a bit into what influenced him musically growing up:
“The way I grew up influenced my music because I lived in a trailer park in South Carolina. Then I was in the trenches in Maryland, near DC, where there was a lot of guns, and I also lived in the suburbs too. Living out those three different socio-economic lifestyles means I’ve witnessed a lot of things and f**ked with different people from all different walks of life. I think this means I can appeal to everybody and that’s what I want to do.”
