For longtime Russ fans, it’s no surprise he’s is back with another single right after he dropped off recent loosies such as “Sorry,” “Freed Up,” and “Paid Off.” He first previewed his new song “I Love Me” back in March, and it finally officially was freed today. On the track, Russ talks about how he has more self-love than love for his partner:
“Pretty women gettin’ curved, they always takin’ it brutal. They been curvin’ since the jump, so this not what they used to. I been well aware of me and all the blessings I offer. I been like this from the jump, I tell this girl that I’m off her, ‘cause.. You got me f**ked up. You got me f**ked up.”
Most recently, Russ can be heard on Queen Naija’s brand new album missunderstood on their collab track “Without You,” a verse he refers to as one of his favorite verses. Russ’ last project Shake The Snow Globe was released back in January and earned him a top five spot on the Billboard 200 with 63,000 album equivalent units sold, and he followed up with its deluxe version later on. Prior to that, he dropped Zoo, which was led by the well-received singles “The Flute Song” and “Missin You Crazy.” Last month, he gifted fans with a visually stunning music video for his new single “Take You Back” featuring Kehlani, which was directed by Edgar Esteves.
In an interview from earlier this year, Russ spoke about the importance of ownership in the music game:
“At the end of the day, when you don’t own your stuff, people can say no. It’s a business, they don’t have to give you back sh*t. It’s sad but my advice to him would be to not renegotiate the deal, don’t sign off for more albums. Whatever albums you have left, put them out ASAP and get out of the f**king deal, then go indie and flood with three or fours albums on a Tunecore-type service or any digital distributor. Build up that independent catalog.”
