In addition to crafting classics for many of his fellow peers, The Alchemist has clearly been in the studio creating masterpieces of his own. Earlier this month, he teamed up with DrX Romanelli and Spencer Lewis to release the conceptual body of work A Doctor, Painter & An Alchemist Walk Into A Bar, which contains 10 tracks and a single assist from Westside Gunn. In a lengthy Instagram post, Lewis explained how the project came together:
“…we set up shop in a small room in Darren’s office. Alchemist making music while I painted, and Darren making jackets based off of my palette, and me painting over some of Darren’s fabrics. In the end we had an album, a bunch of paintings, and a bunch of amazing clothes.”
Now, The Alchemist returns with another masterpiece titled The Food Villain, a 16-track effort that features assistance from Action Bronson and Big Body Bes. The album was apparently spawned from Bronson’s popular Vice/Munchies food and travel show “F***, That’s Delicious,” of which Bes, Alchemist, and fellow frequent collaborator Meyhem Lauren co-starred. He revealed the new concept on Instagram:
“My brother [Action Bronson] had the visiano and put me on the tv screen …
My brothers [Meyhem Lauren] & [Big Body Bes] bullied me until i cracked. One day They dumped me into a vat of acid like the dude in Toxic Avenger. Months later i emerged , the old me was gone and i became THE FOOD VILLAIN .”
In addition to A Doctor, Painter & An Alchemist Walk Into A Bar and The Food Villain, The Alchemist also liberated the joint albums The Price of Tea in China, LULU, and Alfredo with Boldy James, Conway the Machine, Freddie Gibbs, respectively. Aside from maybe Hit-Boy, he might just be the hardest working beatsmith in hip-hop right now.
