Last year, Kaytranada delivered BUBBA, the groovy 17-track project fans have been itching for since his debut project from 2016 titled 99.9%. Although some time has passed, the arrival of his new “The Worst In Me” video could not have been set to a better occasion, as Tinashe stars in the ominous visual with an ending perfectly suited for the nearing holiday, Halloween. Over the signature woozy house Kaytranada beat, Tinashe sings to her lover before things take a turn:
“You make me a mess, never meant to love you so. Played with my emotions, falling for you don’t make no sense. Never could have cried so easily. You always get away with everything. I can’t believe that I let, let you in. Once again, and again, and again.”
The “Worst In Me” video serves as one of three that Kaytranada has debuted following the release of BUBBA. The first was a 1970s-inspired video for “10%,” his collaboration with Kali Uchis, while the second was “Need It,” which featured Masego.
An acoustic version of “Remember When” is a recent offering from Tinashe, which also follows several visuals and features including “Play Fight” and “Hopscotch (Remix)” with THEY., “Rascal (Superstar),” “Only” with ZHU, “Stormy Weather,” the MAKJ-assisted “Save Room For Us,” and more. Prior to that, she released her major label efforts “Aquarius,” “Nightride,” and “Joyride” in 2014, 2016, and 2018, respectively. I August, she also connected with Iggy Azalea on the track “Dance Like Nobody’s Watching.”
In a recent interview, Tinashe delved into the shift back from chasing a hit, to creating things of more importance to her:
“It came to the point where I was chasing whatever a hit may be and trying to sell these genres or box myself in sonically, which I never felt fit who I was. With this project, it was important I get back to creating something that was important for me. But at the same time, I also had the realization that that is what my fans want as well. That’s what they are going to respond to the best, is stuff that feels really legitimate to who I am.”
