DC Comics is celebrating Beyoncé and other iconic women in their forthcoming young adult graphic novel titled, “Wonder Women of History.”
Curated by New York Times bestselling author Laurie Halse Anderson, the anthological series features 17 stories from women and non-binary writers. The talented writers will be sharing heroic anecdotes about those who excel in their respective fields such as science, social justice and politics, and would “take up Wonder Woman’s iconic mantle.”
“Wonder Woman has been an iconic figure for girls and women around the world for generations,” Anderson told Nerdist of her decision to join the project. “She gave me the example of a woman who combined justice, compassion, athleticism, and power that I needed. When the good people at DC brought up the idea of an anthology of real-life Wonder Women to me, I was on board instantly.”
Award-winning musician Janelle Monáe, US Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Senator Elizabeth Warren, transgender activist Marsha P. Johnson, tennis champ luminary Serena Williams and Olympic medalist Dominique Dawes are among the real-life heroes that will be written about.
In addition to the high-profile notable figures that will be spotlighted in the novel, DC will also be giving shine to the project’s contributing scribes and artists such as writers Mikki Kendall, Amanda Deibert, Cat Staggs, Cecil Castellucci and Danielle Paige, too. Accomplished illustrators that will be profiled as well include Weshoyot Alvitre, Colleen Doran, Agnes Garbowska, Bex Glendining, Ashley A. Woods, and Safiya Zerrougui.
Fans will be able to get their hands on a copy of “Wonder Women of History” just in time for the holidays on Dec. 1. The graphic novel is also available for pre-order for those who want to secure the upcoming book ahead of its release.
