Big Sean has offered an exciting new update on his forthcoming album, Detroit 2. Taking to Twitter on Sunday (Aug. 23), the Motor City native confirmed that he has officially finished recording the project and will now begin the mixing phase.

“I feel nothing but happy! Finally done recording #D2,” he wrote alongside some photos of his new Detroit 2 merchandise. “Time for mixing.”

Sean initially announced Detroit 2 back in March. Marking his fifth studio album, the project will serve as a follow-up to his 2012 mixtape, Detroit. Fans expected the effort to arrive back in May, but Sean revealed that COVID-19 and his own perfectionism had delayed its release.

“I feel like a lot of people have been putting out good music, [but] I’m trying to put out my best music I’ve ever done,” he told DJ Khaled on May 25, adding that he was putting his “finishing touches” on the album. “Ain’t a lot of artists putting out their best work in their catalogue, so that’s what I’m striving for. I’m goin’ a little extra. Because that’s what people deserve, that’s what we need right now.”

Sean also explained how the pandemic’s devastating impact on Detroit — his home city — had inspired him to work even harder on the new record.

“Detroit got hit so hard, I feel like I gotta come through deeper just to rep where I’m from,” he said. “Because you know Detroit, first of all, Detroit technically has under a million people, as far as the census. But we was the No. 4 city [for COVID-19 cases]. New York got however many — 15 million people — L.A. got all these tens of millions of people, even Florida, [too]. And Detroit was up with them in the COVID numbers, but we got less than a million people, bro.”
