One of the ex-police officers charged in the shooting death of Rayshard Brooks is out on bond and vacationing in Florida. According to Fox 5 Atlanta, the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office is now seeking to revoke former cop Garrett Rolfe’s bond after prosecutors tracked his ankle monitor in Daytona Beach.
Rolfe was granted a $500,000 bond on June 29, which required him to wear the monitor, surrender his passport and obey a curfew. According to Fulton County District Attorney Paul Howard, Rolfe left for vacation on Aug. 2. He released the records showing his ankle monitor’s location in Daytona beach on Tuesday (Aug. 4).
In Howard’s motion to revoke Rolfe’s bond, he argued that the Atlanta ex-cop should only “leave home for medical, legal, or work-related obligations,” as is required by bond restrictions.
However, in response to the motion, Rolfe’s lawyers have claimed that the judge’s orders didn’t specifically prohibit out-of-state travel. Fox reports that a hearing on the district attorney’s motion to revoke Rolfe’s bond has not yet been announced.
As reported by REVOLT, Rolfe was charged with felony murder and multiple counts of assault with a deadly weapon for the June 12 killing of Brooks. The felony murder charge against Rolfe could mean a life prison sentence or the death penalty if prosecutors choose to seek them. Ex-officer Devin Brosnan was also charged in Brooks’ death for aggravated assault and two counts of violating his oath of office.
Brooks was fatally shot in a Wendy’s parking lot after police responded to calls claiming that he had fallen asleep in his car in the drive-thru lane. After failing a sobriety test, Brooks allegedly resisted arrest and grabbed one of the officers’ tasers. Shots were fired at Brooks as he ran away from the cops and an autopsy report confirmed he was shot twice in the back.
District Attorney Howard later accused Rolfe and Brosnan for failing to get Brooks medical attention in the two minutes after he was shot. Howard also said that video surveillance video showed Rolfe kicking Brooks while he was on the ground and Brosnan standing on his shoulder.
