Texas Christian University (TCU) football coach Gary Patterson has issued an apology after being called out by football player Dylan Jordan for using the N-word during an incident at practice on Sunday (Aug. 2).

“I met with our Seniors and Leadership Council last night about how we move forward as a team, together,” Patterson said in a statement on Twitter. “We are committed as individuals and as a program to fighting racial injustice of any kind.”

He continued, “I apologize for the use of a word that, in any context, is unacceptable. I have always encouraged our players to do better and be better and I must live by the same standards.”

On Monday (Aug. 3), Jordan, a linebacker for TCU, took to Twitter to describe the incident to his followers and fans. He claimed that Patterson teased him for posting a photo of his girlfriend for National Girlfriend Day.

When Jordan confronted the coach for calling him out in front of his teammates, Patterson said, “You’re a fucking brat, I’ll send you back to Pitt.”

Jordan said he replied, “For what, I ain’t did nothin’.” That’s when Patterson replied using the racial slur. “You’ve been saying n*ggas in the meeting room,” the coach said. Other players asked Jordan about the incident and he told them that it did in fact happen.

The team refused to go to practice on Monday and Patterson came into the locker room and said, “I wasn’t calling him a n*gger.”

TCU chancellor Victor Boschini sent out an email to the students saying that Patterson did not use the slur towards a student or the team. “He said it trying to ask the players not to use it anymore,” Boschini wrote. “He has since apologized for doing so in this manner and said it was a teachable moment for him and many others.”
