The family of the late George Floyd filed a wrongful death lawsuit on Wednesday (July 15) against the city of Minneapolis and the police officers responsible for his death.

According to NBC News, the family’s attorney Benjamin Crump said that the 40-page civil suit will continue an “important conversation” on the “pandemic of police brutality.” The complaint listed a string of violent arrests that took place over the last few years in Minneapolis. The family also claims that the city has been negligent in preventing police misconduct.

“It was the knee of the entire Minneapolis Police Department on the neck of George Floyd that killed him,” Crump said. “The city of Minneapolis has a history of policies and procedures and deliberate indifference when it comes to the treatment of arrestees, especially Black men, that cries out for training and discipline.”

The suit also claims that Floyd did not resist arrest. “Mr. Floyd did not physically resist arrest. Mr. Floyd was unarmed and did not at any point physically or verbally threaten the officers, nor did he attempt to flee.”

“As a result of Chauvin, Lane, and Kueng’s unjustified, excessive, and illegal, and deadly use of force, Mr. Floyd experienced conscious pain and suffering,” the lawsuit continued. “As a result of Chauvin, Lane, and Kueng’s unjustified, excessive, illegal, and deadly use of force, Mr. Floyd died.”

The amount of money that the family is seeking was not listed on the lawsuit, but Crump says the amount should be enough to make it “financially prohibitive” for cops to “kill marginalized people and Black people in the future in America.”

City Attorney Erik Nilsson released a statement following the family’s filing calling Floyd’s death a “tragedy.”

“The city is reviewing the civil lawsuit filed by his family and will be responding to it,” he said. “Criminal charges are pending against four Minneapolis police officers and it’s very important that the criminal case proceed without interference.”
