The Louisville Metro Council is planning to launch an investigation into how Mayor Fischer’s administration has handled the case of the late Breonna Taylor, the Courier Journal reports.

“Government Oversight and Audit Chair Brent Ackerson (D-26) and Vice-Chair Anthony Piagentini (R-19) announce their intention to file a bi-partisan resolution that will initiate an investigation of the decisions made by Mayor Fischer and members of his administration in the events leading up to and following the death of Ms. Breonna Taylor,” the news release reads.

They will also look into the death of David McAtee, a Louisville barbecue owner who was shot and killed by police on June 1. “This investigation is meant to investigate topics such as government transparency and the failure of such, the events surrounding the death of David McAtee and the use of force during portions of the protests,” the statement continued.

“We have heard the cries of our citizens,” said Councilman Piagentini. “They are demanding more transparency about who made what decisions and why related to these troubling events. We will do what we are elected to do. We will represent the people and ensure our local government is transparent and that local leaders are held accountable for their decisions.”

Taylor was shot and killed after a group of officers entered her home under a no-knock warrant for a drug raid. Her boyfriend thought someone was breaking into the home and fired a warning shot. The officers returned fire and Taylor was hit at least eight times. Her family says that the officers never announced themselves and no drugs were ever found in the home.

Earlier this month, Attorney General Daniel Cameron asked the public to remain patient as his office continued to investigate the fatal shooting of Taylor. A final decision whether or not to charge the three officers — Jonathan Mattingly, Brett Hankison and Myles Cosgrove — for Taylor’s death has still not been made. Hankison was fired from the department, but has since filed an appeal.
