The Fisk Jubilee Singers are defined as the “The lyrical voice of black reconstruction”. After listening to Celebrating Fisk! (The 150th Anniversary) in full, you’ll understand how they coined this honor. This body of work is a collection of 12 records that elegantly represent and communicate the influential and vibrant history of Fisk University and the Fisk Jubilee Singers.
Dr. Paul Kwami, the album’s Musical Director and Music Director of the Fisk Jubilees, gave a statement on this well constructed pice of work:
This product is the result of work done by wonderful people who love Fisk University and Fisk Jubilee Singers — It was a great honor for me to work with all of them, especially with Shannon Sanders. The beauty of the compilation lies in the variety and high quality of music, which will forever celebrate Fisk University!
With guest appearances from Ruby Amanfu, Keb’ Mo’, Cece Winans and others intact, it features the group from the stage of Nashville’s historic Ryman Auditorium. These days, people’s attention span has shortened significantly when it comes to music — but that isn’t the case with this new project. Each song has its own poise that encourages you to see what more they have up their sleeves with the next song.
