As the world continues to deal with the Coronavirus pandemic, hip hop finds new ways to tell their stories in the midst of uncertainly. Case in point, Young Dolph has found himself reflecting on the new normal via his latest single “Sunshine,” which sees production from DJ Squeeky and gives listeners a vivid inside look into what’s on Dolph’s mind right now:
“‘What’s up, Dolph, what you been doin’?’ S***, listenin’ to the president talkin’ ‘bout the Chinese flu and/
Just like everybody else, n***a, I been quarantining, with my Biscotti, Lemon Tree, and Promethazine and/
I know my garbage man sick of seeing empty pint bottles, FaceTime every day with my sister, auntie, and mama/
F*** it, make a Corona baby with baby mama, last night I was up four in the morning oilin’ my choppers…/”
The video shows Young Dolph at home with his kids, watching the news and showing off his cars, artwork, and more. It’s clear that, despite everything being shutdown, the Paper Route Empire head honcho is getting to the money by any means. He also seems to further allude to the possibility of retirement, something that he initially revealed on social media before deciding against the idea as the behest of his son:
“Highly considering quitting music because i really wanna be with my kids 24/7… y’all nixxas never touched a vacuum sealer until your rap career kicked off, jus to look cool.”
Previously, Dolph teamed up with PRE artist Key Glock for their project Dum and Dummer in 2019. That release earned the duo a top 10 placement on the Billboard 200 thanks to 45,000 equivalent album units sold. Prior to that, he released his fifth studio LP Role Model, which saw assists from Snoop Dogg, Offset, Kash Doll, and more.
Press play on “Sunshine” below. Hopefully, we’ll be hearing even more music from Young Dolph soon.
