It’s been almost 30 years since “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” first aired on our television screens. To commemorate the legendary TV sitcom, DJ Jazzy Jeff is hosting a virtual block party to ease the boredom as everyone practices social distancing.
The “Break the Monotony Block Party” is set to take place on Saturday, May 9 from 12 pm ET to midnight. The virtual all-day event will feature 60-minute sets from over 15 DJs including DJ D-Nice, Just Blaze, DJ Clark Kent and more.
According to Rolling Stone, the online party will also serve as the “launch for a new, limited-edition merch collection dubbed, ‘Fresh Prince/Summertime.’” The unisex collection includes 10 pieces inspired by Will Smith and his musical catalog with DJ Jazzy Jeff. A percentage of the sales for the merch will be donated to No Kid Hungry to provide nutritious meals for children who have been affected by COVID-19.
Jazzy Jeff recently spoke to Rolling Stone about how the block party came about.
“I started live-streaming from home a month ago, every Saturday on IG Live and Facebook,” he told he outlet. “I thought, ‘I’m going to DJ and you’re going to dance in your kitchen with your significant other and we’re going to have a good Saturday.’ But the idea came up that it would be cool to do a block party with not just me DJ-ing, but have a full day of some of the best DJs in the world. So I called up some of my friends and said, ‘Let’s make this an all-day thing. Let’s stay in the house, cook some food, make some drinks, and dance in the kitchen together.’”
Following his own experience with Coronavirus symptoms, the DJ also gave advice to anyone who may feel anxious about leaving their homes during the pandemic.
“I know this is a rough time but we need to all be in this together,” he said. “Take your time, stay in the house. Practice social distancing, and if I can provide any level of entertainment for people to forget some of the stuff they’re going through, I’m gladly here to do it.”
