Just yesterday, Top Dawg Entertainment kicked off their Fan Appreciation Week with a new release from the reclusive Black Hippy emcee Ab-Soul, which re-sparked discussions of a new album from the Carson lyricist. Now, fans get to check out not one, but two new tracks from singer-songwriter Zacari — the laid-back grove “Edamame,” and the more aggressive “This Woman’s Work,” the latter of which features assistance from Che Ecru. Both drops are said to be the first official offerings from the forthcoming release Live from the R&B Underground.
On “This Woman’s Work,” Zacari reflects on a former love:
“Henny, taste like Henny, you’re near me, you can’t stand me/
Yeah, she shows me no mercy, oh no, she don’t show me/
She shows me no mercy, she’s a dancer, she love dancing/
All that dancing, came in handy, you’re the only one that gets a rise out of me, yeah/
You’re the only one that knows I’m dying to be…/”
“Edamame” and “This Woman’s Work” follows Zacari’s 2019 EP Run Wild Run Free, which saw seven tracks and a single appearance from Atlanta rapper Lil Yachty. Zacari has also spent much of his TDE tenure contributing to releases from his labelmates, including Isaiah Rashad’s The Sun’s Tirade, Ab-Soul’s Do What Thou Wilt, Kendrick Lamar’s DAMN and the TDE-helmed Black Panther soundtrack.
During a past interview with Hypebeast, Zacari spoke on being a part of the west coast dynasty that Top Dawg built:
“TDE … they have so much success and they’re willing to talk to me about that s***. They’re willing to give me advice. If I have a question about anything like that. I have a lot of guidance.”
You can press play on both “Edamame” and “This Woman’s Work” below. Fans should definitely be excited for what else TDE has in store this year.
