YG is starting off 2020 by making money moves. According to Variety, YG’s 4Hunnid label has announced a joint venture partnership with Epic Records.
“Me and my team have been doing innovative, legendary stuff for years—helping keep the West Coast alive,” YG said in a statement to Variety. “Now, Epic comes through at the best possible time with a platform for our expansion. I’m proud of this opportunity and will make the most of it.”
Under the new joint venture, Epic will handle all distribution, release, and marketing of all music released under 4Hunnid. The first release is set to be from Compton female rapper Day Sulan, who was featured on YG’s 2019 single, “Her Story.”
“We at Epic are delighted by this joint venture with YG and his forward-thinking 4Hunnid brand,” says Sylvia Rhone, Epic chairwoman and CEO. “YG perfectly represents the new face of hip hop music: versatile, creative, multifaceted, and steeped in history but versed in current trends. This marks an exciting addition to our roster and offerings.”
Back in 2016, YG spoke to Billboard about what he believes is the difference between his 4Hunnid label and other artist-owned record labels.
“We different,” he said. “We 4Hunnid, you know. We like red. We from the West Coast. Like I don’t think nobody could get it how we tryna do it on the West Coast. Ain’t nobody did especially in artist relations. We ain’t fuckin with you if we feel like you can’t be around for 20-plus years. It’s a lotta other artist-owned labels who want artists with hot singles like for right now and that’s cool because that’s the easy money but we getting brands. We teach artists how to build brand and be businessmen and business ladies.”
He continued, “It’s just bigger than being an artist and putting out an album. In the record business, if you sign an artist that don’t really know too much about the business, you can really get over on them in a lot of different ways so it’s a lot of people that don’t give artist the game because they’re trying to make the most money in the fastest way off their artists. They ain’t trying to be business partners with their artists. We bring that to the table.”
Congrats to YG on his new joint venture deal with Epic Records.
