After 17 years, the third installment of Will Smith and Martin Lawrence’s Bad Boys films hit theaters. However, according to The Hollywood Reporter, a Bad Boys 4 is already in the works. The outlet reported that the follow-up to Bad Boys for Life, which hit theaters on Friday (Jan. 17), is already in development. And this time, fans shouldn’t expect to have such a lengthy wait time between films.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the reason for the wait between Bad Boys II and Bad Boys for Life was due to budget costs, but also nailing the right story line.
During a recent interview, Lawrence spoke on his decision to officially get on board for Bad Boys for Life. He told The New York Times, “Well first and foremost, working with Will again. Having that opportunity to work with one of the best in the business once again was a great joy for me. And the fact that we had a great script that we thought was worthy of giving people nothing less than the first two.”
Meanwhile, the film has already been receiving raving reviews. According to Deadline, Bad Boys for Life is expected to be the second-best MLK weekend opening film of all time. The movie is projected to make between $63 million and $67 million over the course of four days.
The movie series began with Bad Boys in 1995 and its’ successor, Bad Boys II, was released in 2003.
Lawrence has since told Entertainment Weekly how the initial film came to life. The comedian said his sister told him about Will Smith, who was known for his starring role on “Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” at the time. “I had dinner with Will and after five minutes of talking, he got the job,” he said. “It was one of the best decisions I ever made.”
And while Lawrence was apprehensive about the film ever happening, Smith admitting to having had less than successful sequels in the past. “I had already messed up a couple sequels in my career, so I needed this one to elevate beyond the first two movies. So I was pushing really hard to make sure that there was a point, that we had something to say, and that the movie was about something,” he said.
