Akon is one step closer to opening Akon City.

The “Locked Up” rapper announced that he has finalized an agreement for the establishment of Akon City in Senegal.

In an Instagram post, he wrote, “Just finalized the agreement for AKON CITY in Senegal. Looking forward to hosting you there in the future.”

He didn’t give away too many details in his post, but back in December, he told Nick Cannon about his goals for the city.

“It’s a 10-year building block so we’re doing it in stages,” he said at the time. “We started construction in March (2019) and stage two is going to be 2025.”

According to The Jakarta Post, Akon has signed an agreement with Senegal’s state-owned tourism company SAPCO to build a complex in the seaside village of Mbodiene. A spokesperson for SAPCO said Akon plans to build a sustainable tourism village that would “campaign for the environment.”

Akon is making sure he puts his money where his mouth is. He also criticizes billionaires who don’t put their money toward similar efforts.

“I always felt like if you have to label yourself a billionaire, I don’t even think billionaires label themselves billionaires. Because you have no idea [how much you’re worth],” he said.

“When I hear stuff like that, it makes me sad in such a way because when I travel I see so many things that happen,” he added. “So many people that need…Things to be resolved. And if you can have a billion dollars sitting in the bank, while you have all these people suffering, it’s crazy to me. It’s like a waste of a billion dollars.”

In 2016, he secured a $1 billion credit line to back his solar project, which helped provide electricity to 600 million Africans.
