Summer Walker is officially Over It. The singer-songwriter exploded on to the R&B scene with her standout single “Girls Need Love,” which later received a show-stopping remix from Drake himself. On top of her smooth, buttery vocals, it’s her no-filter lyrics that audience can’t help but gravitate toward.
On the song’s first verse, she croons, “I just need some dick, I just need some love / Tired of fucking with these lame n*ggas, baby I just need a thug.” These aren’t just sappy songs about romance and relationships, the songstress keeps it ALL the way real.
From her former days rocking the pole in the strip clubs to now catapulting to the forefront of R&B, the 23-year-old proves dreams really can happen with hard work and passion. Following up last year’s Last Day of Summer mixtape, she returns to unleash her debut studio album titled Over It via Love Renaissance (LVRN)/Interscope Records. Executive produced by her bae London On Da Track, the 18-track project features standout appearances from Usher, fellow LVRN labelmate 6lack, PARTYNEXTDOOR, Bryson Tiller, Jhene Aiko, and A Boogie wit da Hoodie.
The excitement does not end there. Recently, she celebrated hitting one billion streams, while placing in the Billboard Hot 100 charts for single “Playing Games” featuring Tiller. Sharing the release to her 1.1 million followers on Instagram, Summer reminds us that every ounce of the project is based on a true story. Her realness and authenticity shines through in all that she does, whether it’s her music or social media rants.
In addition to the hilarious promo video for the project — which shows a seductive phone sex operator introducing the album’s songs with an old-school vibe — the quality in this album simply speaks for itself.
REVOLT compiled five of the best takeaways from the project as we stream Over It straight into cuffing season! Check them out below.
1. Summer Walker respects the OGs of the game
At first glance, you may quickly judge Summer by her face tattoos. But, she knows her shit when it comes to R&B. In fact, seeing rare appearances from Usher and PARTYNEXTDOOR on the album solidifies her talents as a true musician and recording artist. On “Come Thru” featuring Ursher-Baby, she samples his timeless single “You Make Me Wanna…” from 1997.
Having Usher on the record brings us back to that 90s R&B era and creates new love-filled memories that last a lifetime and more.
2. Summer Walker’s music sets that VIBE
On “Tonight,” she croons “Why don’t you pour up that Hennessy? Light up a few blunts and we can get high / No need to rush boy take your time…” While having a boo might be a small requirement in fully relating to these lyrics, her music simply reminds you to live in the moment and live life to the fullest. Whether you have a love interest or not, it’s all about setting the mood; and whether you need a little drank, a little weed, whatever your vice is; there’s nothing wrong with having a little fun.
3. Summer Walker is in LOVE love
If you follow the queen on social media, you already know she’s very open and public when it comes to her man, London On Da Track, who is one of the most well-respected producers in the game. He’s created hits such as Young Thug’s “Check,” T.I.’s “All About The Money,” Kodak Black’s “Roll In Peace,” French Montana’s “No Stylist”… the list goes on.
On “I’ll Kill You” featuring Jhene Aiko, Summer repeats on the chorus, “I’ve been waiting so long for a love like this.” Based on a true story, it was only right for London to produce the record.
4. Summer Walker has been through enough failed relationships
While Summer may be happily dating the project’s executive producer, she’s definitely been through it with her previous relationships — or situationships. On “Just Might” featuring PARTYNEXTDOOR, she sings, “Love is a losin’ game and I just can’t take no more / Said love is a losin’ game, so I just might be a ho.” It was through reminiscing on these experiences that she found herself and realized men come and go, and she might be better off simply playing the same game. In the end, she realizes her worth — everything Over It is based on.
5. Summer Walker is OVER her exes
“Stretch You Out” featuring A Boogie wit da Hoodie sees Summer reminiscing on a past relationship, airing out all the bullshit she had to put up with while in it. She sings, “Can’t you see I’m fucking trying? You want pussy six times a week and you never wanna clean up /And you talk to me like shit, and you handle me too rough.” While she puts in her end of the stick, his inability to fulfill her makes Summer realize that she can do better. In other words, sex is cool, but sometimes it’s just not worth it.
