In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness month, Matthew Knowles, Beyoncé and Solange Knowles’ father, sat down with Michael Strahan on “Good Morning America” where he shared the details behind his breast cancer diagnosis.

During their conversation, Knowles revealed that he immediately called his family following the devastating news. After breaking the news to his loved ones, Knowles stated that everyone took action by getting tested. “This is genetics,” Knowles said. “It also means that my kids have a higher chance, a higher risk, even my grandkids have a higher risk. And they handled it like they should. They went and got the test.”

On Tuesday (Oct. 1), the shocking news surfaced the internet after a clip of the upcoming interview was posted. “How was it to tell your family about the diagnosis?” Strahan asked Knowles. Breast cancer is rare in males, according to TMZ. “However, it’s most frequently diagnosed in men between the ages of 60 and 70. Mathew is 67 years old,” the outlet reports.

In the past, Knowles was married to Tina Knowles before they split in 2011. Since divorcing Tina, Knowles has fathered two additional children. In 2013, the record executive tied the knot to Gena Avery.

Following the news, fans have shared heartfelt messages on social media to both Matthew and the Knowles family. ”Following that Matthew Knowles news I am concerned with the amount of people that didn’t know men could get breast cancer,” one user wrote on the importance of getting tested early. “# MATTHEWKNOWLES I WANT YOU TO FIGHT YOUR BEST FIGHT, AGAINST BREAST CANCER! MEN IN GENERAL DON’T KNOW OR BELIEVE THEY TOO CAN GET BREAST CANCER. THOUGH THEY’RE MEN, AND NOT WOMEN! I WISH THE VERY BEST FOR YOU!” another user wrote.
