Lil Nas X has admitted that opening up about his sexuality to his father was tougher than announcing it to the world. In a new interview with Billboard, the “Old Town Road” rapper shared the “nerve-racking” experience, which he compared to ripping off a Band-Aid. He apparently broke the news to his father before he took to Twitter over the summer.
“It’s something I never probably would have did if I was still living with my parents,” he said. “I have that independence to do it, you know?”
Nas X confirmed his sexuality back in June. He wrote on Twitter at the time, “Some of y’all already know, some of y’all don’t care, some of y’all not gone fwm no more. but before this month ends i want y’all to listen closely to c7osure.”
He also admitted during an interview with BBC Breakfast that he was hesitant about coming out. “I mean, it’s just something that I was considering just never doing it, ever, just taking to the grave or something,” X said. “But I don’t wanna just live my entire life—especially, you know, how I just got to where I’m at—just not doing what I wanna do. And I’m also, I feel, opening doors for more people.”
Lil Nas X hasn’t shied away from conversations regarding is sexuality. During his appearance on HBO’s “The Shop: Uninterrupted” earlier this month, he spoke on the importance of revealing his sexuality while his career continues to ascend.
“Homosexuality, gay people,” Lil Nas explained. “Come on, now. If you really from the hood, you know. For me, the cool dude with the song on the top of everything to say this any other time, I’m doing this for attention in my eyes. But if you’re doing this while you’re at the top, you know it’s for real. It’s showing it doesn’t really matter I guess.”
