Former NBA star Sebastian Telfair is no longer behind bars after receiving a 3.5-year prison sentence for gun-related charges. According to TMZ, Telfair was reportedly released on $500,000 bail. Per the terms of Telfair’s release, he must surrender is passports, stay in NYC, wear an ankle monitor and be on house arrest from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m.

Telfair was initially facing a 15-year sentence. However, his attorneys have filed an appeal and asked that Telfair be released from prison while “the process plays out.”

The former NBA baller’s case stems from a June 2017 arrest on weapons and drug-related charges, Complex reports. He was taken into custody following a traffic stop in Brooklyn. Telfair’s Ford F-150 SUV was parked on a center median and was approached by police in an unmarked car. An officer testified in court and said they smelled marijuana in the vehicle and saw a lit joint in the car’s console, according to AM New York. Police allegedly discovered marijuana, three loaded firearms, one semi-automatic rifle and a bulletproof vest inside of Telfair’s car.

Telfair was convicted of one count of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon in April. He was sentenced in Brooklyn Supreme Court last month. “My kids gonna think I hurt somebody,” he reportedly said during his sentencing. “… Please don’t take me from the society right now. I’m 34. I can go play in China for another six years, take care of my family.”

Following Telfair’s plea with the court, Judge John Hecht who was presiding over his case said, “I’m not going to say very much, I’ve observed you throughout the trial. I don’t think the people disagree… the judgment in this case sir, is what the jury convicted you of … You’ve achieved greatness in your life and this case doesn’t take that away.”

Telfair was drafted by the Portland Trail Blazers in the first round of the NBA draft back in 2004, according to the New York Daily News. He stayed in the league until 2014 and signed with the Xinjiang Flying Tigers to play professional basketball overseas in China.
