The car Kevin Hart was riding in reportedly lacked critical safety features.

According to TMZ, the comedian was riding in a “death trap in the form of a tricked out 1970 Plymouth Barracuda.” Car experts said that the car lacked key safety features that could have prevented the injuries he sustained from the car accident.

A number of owners of car customizing shops specializing in performance vehicles told TMZ that it is “highly unusual” for cars with 720 horsepower to be outfitted without a five-point harness and roll cage.

Comedian Joe Rogan enlisted Rad Rides by Troy to build his Hemi-powered 1970 Barracuda, which is the same car. Employees at the shop told TMZ that Rogan’s car has a five-point harness and roll cage. They were also surprised that Hart’s vehicle was not similarly built.

While the incident is still being investigated, it was recently reported that police believe the driver in the accident was reportedly peeling out. According to TMZ, a witness said that the driver, who is also Hart’s friend, Jared Black, was peeling out before the accident occurred. The witness claims to have heard tires screeching, which was shortly followed by the sound of a car crashing through a fence. Hart was sitting in the passenger seat and Black’s fiancée, Rebecca Broxterman, was sitting in the backseat.

Hart left the scene to go home and seek medical attention. He was later taken to the hospital for his injuries.

The comedian suffered three spinal fractures and has since undergone back surgery. Page Six reports that he will require physical therapy to make full recovery. He is expected to remain in the hospital for a few days while he recovers.

Kevin’s wife, Eniko Hart, told TMZ last week that the comedian is “going to be just fine” while on her way into the hospital.
