FX has an upcoming docuseries in the works centered around Tupac and his mother, Afeni Shakur.
According to Deadline, the five-part docuseries, which is entitled Outlaw: The Saga of Afeni and Tupac Shakur, will be told through the eyes of people who knew them best. The docuseries, which is directed by Allen Hughes, will cover topics of freedom, equality, persecution and justice.
“FX has long sought to give artists a platform to showcase their individual, uncompromising vision and its new docuseries and features are an opportunity to extend that ambition in our collaboration with non-fiction talent,” said Nick Grad. “Under the guidance of FX’s Jonathan Frank and J.J. Klein, we are now honored to partner with these new teams to create docuseries and features that will join FX’s legacy of fearless and groundbreaking programming.”
Back in May, the late rapper’s estate granted “full access” to Hughes to use Tupac’s unreleased material including recordings, writings and poetry. This is a moment of relief considering back in June of 2017, an unauthorized biopic entitled All Eyez on Me was released. The film starred Demetrius Shipp Jr., Danai Gurira and Kat Graham. Many expressed their disfavor of the film including Jada Pinkett Smith.
Before his untimely death back in 1996, Tupac was quite vocal regarding his adoration for his mother. On his hit song, “Dear Mama,” Tupac paid homage to Afeni.
“‘Cause through the drama I can always depend on my mama/And when it seems that I’m hopeless/You say the words that can get me back in focus/When I was sick as a little kid/To keep me happy there’s no limit to the things you did/And all my childhood memories/Are full of all the sweet things you did for me,” he raps.
The five-part docuseries’ release date has yet to be confirmed.
