The conversation regarding female rappers continues to grow. Following Jermaine Durpri’s comments about female emcees, Da Brat stepped in to defend the 46-year-old rapper.
While speaking to paparazzi at LAX airport on Tuesday (July 17), Brat called Dupri “genius.” She explained that his comments will help shed light on female rappers as a whole.
“Everything Jermaine Dupri does, he does strategically,” she said. “You should be thankful that the conversation is even started now because now the focus in on us [female rappers]. New [rappers], seasoned [rappers], legends…everybody’s commenting.”
When asked about his “strippers” remark, Brat explained that there is a method to Durpi’s madness and that his words were taken out of context. “I love Jermaine Dupri, he’s very smart at what he does and there’s always a method to his madness,” she said.
Speaking on Dupri’s comments, the So So Def female cypher creator believes that female rappers of today all spit about the same thing. During his interview, Dupri was asked about Cardi B, Nicki Minaj and Megan Thee Stallion.
“I feel they’re all rapping about the same thing,” he said. “I don’t think they’re showing us who’s the best rapper. For me, it’s like strippers rapping and as far as rap goes I’m not getting who’s the best.”
Nonetheless, many have responded to Dupri’s comments. Cardi B explained that there are female rappers who are worthy of recognition. “Let me tell you about some rappers that are really f–king dope, that be rapping they ass off, and I don’t feel like they get the recognition that they deserve,” Cardi began. “Tierra Whack, Kamaiyah, Rapsody, there’s this girl called Oranika…”
Over the weekend, Meek Mill cosigned Bardi’s opinion. The Philly rapper believes that Tierra Whack is at the top of her game. “The best female rapper in the world is @TierraWhack let’s argue,” he wrote on Twitter.
