Last night (July 11), singer R. Kelly was arrested in Chicago on 13 new federal charges including child pornography and obstruction of justice.
According to CBS News, Kelly is being held at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Chicago. The United States Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Illinois confirmed that the 52-year-old musician has been indicted on 13 counts of child pornography, enticement of a minor to engage in criminal sexual activity and obstruction of justice. Today (July 12), the Eastern District of New York is expected to file racketeering charges against Kelly.
The Trapped in the Closet singer has been charged with over 20 counts of sexual abuse in Cook County. Back in February, he was charged with 10 counts of sexual abuse involving four females and three children. Two months ago, he was charged with an additional 11 felony counts.
As per the May indictment, R. Kelly engaged in sex acts with a victim, identified as JP, “in such a manner as to threaten or endanger the life of JP.”
Back in March, Kelly sat down for an explosive interview with Gayle King. During the conversation, the two discussed Kelly’s charges of aggravated criminal sexual abuse and the allegations made in the six-part Lifetime docu-series “Surviving R. Kelly.” While getting emotional, R. Kelly did his best to defend himself.
“How stupid would it be for me, with my crazy past and what I’ve been through – oh right, now I just think I need to be monster, and hold girls against their will, chain them up in my basement, and don’t let them eat, don’t let them out, unless they need some shoes down the street from their uncle!” Kelly said to King in an effort to clear his name.
We will provide more updates as the case continues to unfold.
