For the last day of LGBTQ Pride Month, Lil Nas X seemingly confirmed his sexuality. Yesterday (June 30), Nas prompted his fans to listen to his song “C7osure (You Like)” in which he hints at his sexual orientation.
“Some of y’all already know, some of y’all don’t care, some of y’all not gone fwm no more but before this month ends i want y’all to listen closely to ‘c7osure,’” the “Old Town Road” rapper wrote as a tweet.
On the song “C7osure (You Like),” Nas makes vague references to trying new places and embracing new ideas.
“Brand new places I’ll choose and I’ll go, I know/Embracin’ this news I behold unfolding/I know, I know, I know it don’t feel like it’s time/But I look back at this moment, I’ll see that I’m fine/I know, I know, I know it don’t feel like it’s time/I set boundaries for myself, it’s time to cross the line,” he raps.
Nonetheless, fans have posted their reactions towards the Atlanta rapper’s surprising news. One fan defended the 20-year-old artist by acknowledging his bravery. “Y’all been bullying Lil Nas X about his sexuality for MONTHS,” the fan tweeted. “He finally comes out and he’s still getting ridiculed. By his own community. Knowing how hard is for a black gay male to be embraced in hip hop, y’all CONTINUE to shade this boy. SMFH.”
Another fan stated that this is incredible news. “Lil Nas X, a black rapper and new artist with the #1 song on the Hot 100 for the twelfth week running, coming out as gay on the last day of Pride month is so fucking incredible words cannot express,” the fan wrote.
Despite the support from some fans, there were those who questioned the authenticity of Lil Nas’ reveal. Even so, the 7 rapper appeared to backpedal on his own announcement. While on Instagram last night, Nas wrote: “just cause I’m gay don’t mean I’m gay.” Later, a fan asked Lil Nas X to admit that his announcement was a joke to which he responded: “I’m gay as a joke.”
A few days prior, Lil Nas’ breakout single “Old Town Road” snagged the title of most streamed song in 2019 so far. The song is also the highest selling digital song so far this year and sold a total of 958,000 units.
