Mary J. Blige has been selected as the 2019 recipient of BET’s Lifetime Achievement Award.
As announced on Thursday (June 13), the iconic singer, songwriter, actress and philanthropist is being awarded with the honor at the 2019 BET Awards, set to take place at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles on Sunday, June 23.
The Lifetime Achievement Award celebrates artists who have made an impactful contribution to music and culture, with past recipients including Anita Baker, Charlie Wilson and Prince.
Blige has cultivated a legacy across industries, even making history in 2018 as the first double nominee across the acting acting and music categories for Best Song and Best Supporting Actress for Mudbound at the Academy Awards last year.
With eight multi-platinum albums, nine Grammy Awards (plus a staggering 32 nominations), two Academy Award nominations, two Golden Globe nominations and a SAG nomination, there is no shortage of reasons to celebrate her undeniable impact.
As one of the most definitive voices and innovators in contemporary R&B, Blige has remained an inspiration to countless across the globe, whether through her soulful voice, philanthropy or her dedication to empowering others.
On top of announcing her upcoming joint tour with Nas, which is set to kick off this July, Blige has also recently used her platform as part of the American Cancer Society’s latest campaign.
As previously announced, Cardi B, DJ Khaled, Migos, H.E.R., Lil Nas X, Billy Ray Cyrus, Lizzo, Mustard, Lil Baby, Yung Miami of City Girls and more are set to perform at the 2019 BET Awards. Additionally, Taraji P. Henson, Lena Waithe, Morris Chestnut, Yara Shahidi and Marsai Martin have also been announced as presenters.
