Prior to confirming the devastating news that his longtime collaborator and Geto Boys confidant, Bushwick Bill, has passed, Scarface announced a monumental shift in his career’s focus.

The announcement, made bittersweet given the timing of losing his close friend to a battle with cancer, confirmed the Houston rap legend will be running for political office in his home city.

“It’s official,” the 48-year-old rapper, born Brad Jordan, shared on Instagram. “I’m offering myself for service as the next Houston City Councilmember for District D. Join our movement!”

In August 2018, the renowned lyricist hinted at a pivot into local politics when Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner and Councilman Dwight Boykins gave him his own holiday, declaring June 26 as Brad “Scarface” Jordan Day.

“You know me as ‘Scarface,’ but now you get the opportunity to meet Brad Jordan,” he shared at the time. “I’ve done a lot of music and I did a lot of speaking […] and I want to let y’all know I’m getting ready to make a super impact in the community because that’s the most important thing to me right now, that’s my passion: to make sure everybody is treated equally, to make sure we get equal justice, to make sure that everybody is on the same level playing field and I hope that you will stand behind me in my positive purpose of making this happen. Thank you to the city of Houston.”

Scarface’s campaign slogan has reportedly been dubbed “Of the People, For the People.” He also noted how he will be sharing more details about his campaign shortly, directing fans to visit his official website, www.bradfordistrictd.com.

From his work co-founding the nonprofit Positive Purpose Movement, which focuses on creating and supporting programs for underrepresented communities, to his diehard love and loyalty for the city that made him, Scarface’s foray into politics is arriving right on time.
