Tupac Shakur’s life story is coming to the small screen.

Director Allen Hughes has secured a deal with the late rapper’s estate to produce a five-part documentary series based on the hip hop icon, Deadline reports. Hughes has been granted “full access” to all of Shakur’s unreleased material, including recordings, writings, and poetry, the outlet revealed.

The yet-to-be-titled docuseries will be the first to be approved by his estate since the beloved rapper’s death at the age of 25 in September 1996.

In June 2017, an unauthorized biopic, titled All Eyez On Me, was released. The film starred newcomer Demetrius Shipp Jr. as Shakur and Black Panther‘s Danai Gurira playing Shakur’s mother, Afeni Shakur. Vampire Diaries actress Kat Graham starred as Shakur’s longtime friend, actress Jada Pinkett-Smith.

Following the film’s release, Pinkett-Smith shared her thoughts about the movie, calling the portrayal of her relationship with Shakur “deeply hurtful.”

“Forgive me… my relationship to Pac is too precious to me for the scenes in All Eyez On Me to stand as truth,” she tweeted at the time. “Pac never read me that poem. I didn’t know that poem existed until it was printed in his book,” she wrote, calling out specific scenes in the movie. “Pac never said goodbye to me before leaving for LA. He had to leave abruptly and it wasn’t to pursue his career,” she continued.

“I’ve never been to any of Pac’s shows by his request,” the 47-year-old added. “We never had an argument backstage.” Pinkett-Smith wasn’t the only one who took issue with the biopic.

The late John Singleton, who directed Shakur in 1993’s Poetic Justice, was originally tapped to write and direct the film but left production over “creative differences.” During his appearance on Drink Champs that year, Singleton expressed his desire to make his version of 2Pac’s story one day. The beloved director passed away after suffering a stroke in April.

Hughes will executive produce the upcoming documentary series alongside Lasse Järvi and Charles D. King. Tom Pellegrini will also produce the project in a co-production with Interscope Films and MACRO.
