Big Sean has built his career on a foundation that places emphasis on acknowledging his own faults, growth and desire to keep elevating. As he weaves his hard-earned wisdom into his bars, the Detroit rapper has also utilized social media on occasion to be as transparent as possible with his fans about his own journey.

Taking to Instagram Monday night (May 21), Big Sean opened up about some thoughts he has been having, directing his attention to the man accused of murdering Nipsey Hussle. While he doesn’t address Eric Holder by name, he does have a strong message regarding how the late rapper’s death could have been avoided through better communication.

“It’s something that’s been on my mind really since Nipsey’s funeral, well, actually since he died,” he began. “To the person who murdered Nipsey, to people like that who take somebody’s life out of impulse or for revenge or whatever the case may be, you’re making a permanent solution to a temporary problem. Obviously, that’s not how you solve them problems.”

He continued, “I don’t know if we know the value of a life for real ’cause when you take somebody’s life, you send back they family, you send a whole lineage back, generations […] When you take somebody’s life, you setting all that back and for what? For something that could have been communicated better.”

He then continues on, discussing the internal work he has been focusing on as of late and reflecting on how senseless violence has stolen countless great men throughout history.

“I myself am a terrible communicator. I’ve been working on it,” the 31-year-old expressed. “I’m becoming better. It takes a lot of effort. I have noticed in men, and in black men, we talk to communicate certain ways. We talk to be tough, we talk to stand tough. Get your revenge, retaliate through violence, all that type of s–t. But we gon’ keep losing kings—we gon’ keep losing Martin Luther Kings, we gon’ keep losing Malcolm Xs, we gon’ keep losing Nipsey Hussles—and for what?”

Big Sean then notes how if people were to put their egos and pride aside to talk things out effectively, it could offer a tangible solution moving forward.

“My mom always used to say and people always used to say, ‘Communication can save a nation,’” he said, concluding his broadcast. “It didn’t mean s–t to me, but now it definitely has a whole new meaning. Facts.”

Big Sean’s message to Nipsey Hussle’s accused killer, which has since been viewed over 780,000 times, sparked a dialogue in the comments section, with countless weighing in to commend the rapper for sharing his perspective.

In April, Holder was arrested and charged with one count of murder, two counts of attempted murder and one count of possession of a firearm by a felon following the shooting that took place outside of Nipsey’s Marathon Clothing store in Los Angeles on March 31. If convicted of murder, Holder faces 25 years to life in prison.
