This weekend, Travis Scott performed in Alabama at the Hangout Fest and made a vast political move in the wake a new Alabama bill that bans abortion in almost all circumstances.
Before performing his verse from SZA’s “Love Galore,” Travis announced that he is donating proceeds from his merch table to Planned Parenthood. While he didn’t name the abortion bill specifically, he told the crowd, “love is the strongest thing that we can have.”
Last Wednesday (May 15), Alabama’s female Governor Kay Ivey signed the most restrictive abortion law in the United States since Roe vs. Wade was decided in 1973. The Alabama Human Life Protection Act essentially outlaws abortions, even cases of incest and rape.
The new law that’s set to go into effect in January will make it a Class A felony to perform an abortion. Under the law, doctors can face a prison sentence of 10-99 years for performing the procedure. The bill was passed after being voted on by a group of 25 all-male Republican Alabama senators.
Scott isn’t the only one taking a stand against recent abortion laws. Offset shared a set of tweets about his disapproval of the Alabama bill, “New laws is slavory,” Offset tweeted. “To force a rape victim to keep a child is SLAVORY IM NOT PROUD TO SAY IM FROM AMERICA!!!”
Stars like Lady Gaga, Lizzo and Janelle Monáe have spoken out against the law. Rihanna called out the senators and Alabama’s governor on Instagram for their decision. “These are the idiots making decisions for WOMEN in America. Governor Kay Ivey…SHAME ON YOU!!!!”
In a recent interview with Mic, Common called the law unethical. “You’re taking away people’s rights as human beings,” he said to the publication. “That whole dictatorship mentality is being perpetuated by the president.”
