The late John Singleton will be honored at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival.

On Thursday (May 2), it was announced that Singleton’s directorial debut, 1991’s Boyz n the Hood, will be screened for free at the annual film festival. Jane Rosenthal, co-founder, CEO and executive chair of Tribeca Enterprises, released a statement about the beloved filmmaker, writing, “John Singleton accomplished what all creators strive to. He entertained, but also inspired a generation of audiences.”

Rosenthal continued, “As the first African-American director as well as the youngest director to be nominated for an Academy Award at the age of 24, he allowed so many to envision themselves as changemakers. We want to celebrate him as we consider the legacy that he has left behind and so the Festival is adding a free screening of Boyz n the Hood on Friday, May 3 for the community to come together, see his pivotal film, and honor John.”

Boyz n the Hood, starring Morris Chestnut, Cuba Gooding, Jr., Laurence Fishburne, Angela Bassett, and Ice Cube in his debut film role, will be screened today (May 3) at 5:30 p.m. local time in the SVA Theatre. Attendees are urged to sign up for free tickets to the event here.

The film, widely considered a classic in black cinema, follows the lives of three friends growing up in crime-ridden South Central Los Angeles. Singleton went on to earn the distinguished honor as the first African-American and youngest person ever to be nominated for Best Director after its release. Boyz n the Hood also scored Singleton a Best Original Screenplay nomination.

On Monday (April 29), Singleton’s family made the decision to remove him from life support after he suffered a major stroke two weeks prior. Many celebrities, including Taraji P. Henson and Tyrese who starred in 2001’s Baby Boy, written and directed by Singleton, shared their condolences immediately after. His iconic work will forever live on.
