Lil Nas X’s “Old Town Road” might be the No. 1 song on Billboard’s Hot 100 singles chart, but one person who isn’t a fan of the country-trap hit is Harlem rapper Dave East.

On Thursday (April 18), East made headlines after sharing his evidently unpopular opinion about the record. “This f—king ‘Old Town Road’ s—t is f—king wack,” he said on his Instagram Stories. “I don’t know what the f—k is going on with hip-hop [or] rap,” East added. The 30-year-old went on to clarify, saying, “I ain’t no hater man, but that s—t is wack with a cape on it. It’s super wack.”

While the internet immediately responded to the now-viral clip with their passionate thoughts and feelings, Lil Nas X took a different approach to the snub. Instead of directly addressing East, he shared an old clip of Kevin Hart explaining why people tend to be “negative” on the online.

“It’s not cool to be positive,” Hart said during an interview with Joe Rogan. “What do you have going on that you have the time to just simply be that negative?” he asked. “I don’t think people understand how valuable they can be if they used their time correctly.”

“Well played,” one user wrote in response to the subtle clapback. “All imma say is I’m proud of you,” another user tweeted.

Meanwhile, East appears to have had a change of heart following the backlash. After turning off the comments on his Instagram photos, the Paranoia rapper uploaded an Instagram Story of himself listening to “Old Town Road.” In a series of clips, East smiled and danced as the song played in the background, as shown below. He also added a shrug emoji to the post signaling a truce.

Who knows, maybe he might even hop on a remix. Stranger things have happened.
