After Nipsey Hussle was shot and killed in Los Angeles over the weekend, police have today confirmed the suspected gunman is now in custody.

Confirming the update to CBS, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department issued a statement that 29-year-old Eric Holder was apprehended by deputies on Tuesday afternoon (April 2).

LAPD Chief Michel Moore told reporters Holder, an identified gang member, approached the 33-year-old Grammy-nominated rapper and the other men he was with outside of his Marathon Clothing store location several times on Sunday (March 31). After speaking with them, according to authorities, Holder then returned with a handgun and opened fire.

“Mr. Holder walked up on multiple occasions and engaged in a conversation with Nipsey and the others that were there. He left and subsequently came back armed with a handgun, and purposefully and repeatedly fired, striking and killing Nipsey Hussle,” Moore shared in a statement.

As reported, one of the injured men was hospitalized while the other was treated at the scene and refused to be transported. Nipsey was rushed to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead, sending a shockwave of grief over the nation.

After the shooting incident took place, Holder reportedly fled the scene in a 2016 Chevrolet Cruz being driven, which had California license plates and was driven by an unidentified woman.

“At this point in our investigation, based on witness statements, and the background of those that we’ve identified, we believe this to be a dispute between Mr. Hussle and Mr. Holder,” Moore said. “It appears to be a personal matter between the two of them in regards to a dispute, and I’ll leave it at that.”

In addition to confirming the suspect’s identity and that he is now in police custody, Moore also gave an update on the stampede that broke out as fans gathered to pay their respects to the slain rapper at a vigil Monday night (April 1). Reports of a gun led to the scene erupting in chaos and resulted in at least 19 people being injured.

“Another individual there, seeing [a man with a weapon] and recognizing the danger in that, attempted to disarm him,” Moore said. “And in that struggle, that caused, obviously, panic in that group of hundreds of people, and a cascade, or stampede if you will, of people hoping to leave and not suffer any injury. The vast majority of the injuries that we saw were cut injuries from falls, sprains, ankles and so forth.”

He also noted how police have not confirmed reports that a victim was stabbed at the vigil. Two other women also came forward with reports they were shot, another development that has yet to be confirmed by police.

“We will continue to investigate the nature of the injuries the two women suffered, I’m not questioning their account, but at this point, I’m lacking information that a shooting occurred,” Moore added.
