Speculation regarding the Super Bowl LIII halftime show has been at an all-time high and is only going to keep growing as the big day creeps closer.
After it was confirmed that Maroon 5 was set to headline the annual affair, rumors began swarming that Cardi B would be a fitting special guest. However, the Bronx rapper, who is featured on the pop group’s No. 1 single “Girls Like You,” has reportedly not been successfully persuaded.
According to a new report from Page Six (Dec. 26), Cardi B has been repeatedly invited to join Maroon 5 on stage but is not interested in committing to the high profile appearance for a couple of reasons.
First and foremost, a source close to the negotiations explained that it’s going to take a concrete offer for this year’s breakout superstar to agree to a guest appearance.
“Cardi B is standing tough and holding out,” the source shared with Page Six. “She doesn’t want to do it unless they roll out the red carpet for her.”
According to the source, in order to be on board for the appearance, Cardi B reportedly demanded a fee of $1 million to perform alongside Maroon 5, as well as requested her own solo slot. Artists are not paid for their involvement with the halftime show but are given a “gift in kind” by the NFL, which typically covers costs related to production, transportation and wardrobe, making Cardi B’s demands a bit staggering.
Another reason explaining Cardi B’s resistance to being tied to the Super Bowl is her ongoing support of Colin Kaepernick. The rapper previously said that if she was asked by the NFL to perform, she would only be interested “when they hire Colin Kaepernick back.”
While Cardi B’s camp is making it clear the chances she will do a guest appearance during the televised event are increasingly slim, Travis Scott on the other hand is reportedly set to appear alongside Maroon 5. The rapper’s decision to be involved with the upcoming show has been met with backlash. It was recently reported that JAY-Z is working on trying to talk him out of it.
At this rate, only time will tell what goes down on February 3rd when it’s time for the big game to kick off.
