At this point in his career, is it even a J. Cole album if it didn’t go platinum with no features? While the accolade has become a bit of a running joke, especially when using it as a reminder on a different topic, the Dreamville rapper has once done exactly that.
As confirmed by the RIAA, J. Cole’s fifth studio album, K.O.D., has officially sold over one million album equivalents, earning him the platinum certification.
Even though the album technically includes a guest feature credited to Kill Edward, the alter ego belongs to J. Cole, allowing him to keep his “platinum with no features” reputation running strong.
The project, which arrived in April of this year, spans twelve tracks and explores a variety of topics, ranging from drug abuse, addiction, depression and greed, among others. It also marked the rapper’s fifth consecutive number-one album in the country, making its debut atop the Billboard 200 and breaking several streaming records.
In addition to earning a new plaque from the RIAA, J. Cole’s latest guest feature has also arrived, appearing 21 Savage‘s new album, i am > i was, which dropped today (Dec. 21).
During the track in question, titled “A Lot,” J. Cole shows empathy toward 6ix9ine, offering a prayer on the incarcerated rapper’s behalf.
“Pray for Tekashi / they want him to rot,” Cole raps during the introductory song. “I picture him inside a cell on a cot / ‘Flectin’ on how he made it to the top / Wondering if it was worth it or not.”
To help promote the project, 21 Savage appeared on The Breakfast Club, reflecting on how he came to get Cole on his album.
“I had met J. Cole probably last year, at Made In America,” 21 Savage explains. “Jay-Z festival. We exchanged numbers, and always been talking on some big brother, giving me advice on my career s—t. He randomly texted me like, I’m in Atlanta, what studio you at? I had my kids with me, and [booked a studio session], and we just vibed out. He took the song with him back home to Raleigh, cause he drove.”
Congrats to J. Cole for his latest RIAA certification and check out his appearance on 21 Savage’s new album below.
