Claiming one’s place in the game doesn’t come without being challenged, as R&B singer and relative newcomer Jacquees is learning firsthand.

Over the weekend, the singer filmed a video during which he confidently asserted that he is the “King of R&B,” a title that many are arguing the 24-year-old has far from earned at this stage in his career.

“I just want to let everybody know that I’m the king of R&B right now…for this generation,” he says in the viral clip. “I understand who done came and who done did that, and that and that. But, now it’s my turn. Jacquees, the king of R&B. I just heard ’em said and I feel it. ATL, let’s get it. I’m the king of R&B.”

Tank, for one, was quick to shut the singer down, laying out his own interpretation of what the “King of R&B” should have accomplished before using such a phrase. A similar debate erupted when rapper 6ix9ine claimed himself to be the “King of New York,” and now it appears to be R&B’s turn.

“First R. Kelly is the King of R&B,” Tank wrote. “The accusations don’t disqualify what he’s accomplished! Second, if you can’t go in the studio BY YOURSELF and make a hit record, you’re not my king! If you can’t sing it better live, you’re not my king!”

Others such as Tyrese, Eric Bellinger, Trey Songz and Ty Dolla $ign– to name a few — have also weighed in on the matter with many cracking jokes and nominating their own contenders for the coveted claim. From the memes claiming who is actually the “King of R&B” to the unapologetic roasting of Jacquees, this debate is definitely heating up and making for an interesting start to the week.
