LL Cool J and Ice Cube are possibly looking to add another dimension to their legacies.
As reported by TMZ, the two veteran rappers are looking to get involved in sports television. According to the report, both are members of a “powerful group” looking to bid on 22 regional sports channels currently up for sale due to a recent ruling against Disney, the current owner.
Officials reportedly determined that Disney, who owns ESPN and recently acquired 21st Century Fox, would have too much power and control of the sports media landscape if allowed to maintain ownership of all of Fox’s sports-related assets.
As a result, the Justice Department is requiring the company to sell its FOX sports networks, including Fox Sports San Diego, Fox Sports Arizona, Fox Sports Detroit, Fox Sports Southwest and the YES Network. The latter New York-based channel exclusively broadcasts Yankee games and is said to be worth between $5 and $6 billion. Additionally, the deal for all 22 channels included in the package is expected to run between $15 and $25 billion.
Per TMZ, LL Cool J and Ice Cube have joined forces with a slew of influential power players, including billionaire Alex and Ani jewelry founder Carolyn Rafaelian, to go in on the bid together.
While both LL and Cube have kept mum on the subject, initial bids for the 22 sports channels are due tomorrow (Nov. 8).
