Let’s recap Kanye West’s contentious relationship with the Grammy Awards. After repeatedly winning Best Rap Album for The College Dropout, Late Registration, Graduation, and My Beautiful Dark Twisted Family, he was famously (and rightfully) upset with the Academy for MBDTF failing to receive a nod for Album of the Year; nearly stage-crashed Beck’s acceptance speech in 2015 when he beat out Beyonce’s self-titled LP for the same major trophy; called the awarding system “off and completely out of touch” in 2016; and promised to boycott the 2017 show if Frank Ocean’s Blonde wasn’t recognized.

Now, however, according to TMZ, Kanye’s team at Def Jam has submitted his and Kid Cudi’s Kids See Ghosts cut “Freee (Ghost Town Pt. 2)” for both Best Rock Song and Best Rock Performance.

TMZ reports that “submissions have already made it through the screening process” and that if Kanye’s garner enough support, they’ll achieve the nominations. (West is also reportedly looking to be considered for Producer of the Year after notably going behind the board for five albums this past June.)

This may not be the only instance at next year’s ceremony in which one of music’s most popular artists appears in a genre that we didn’t expect: Post Malone’s Beerbongs & Bentleys has been rumored to be considered in pop categories, despite its trap&b vibes.

The 61st Annual Grammy Awards will air February 10, 2019.
