It was five year ago when JAY-Z inducted the concept of “new rules,” fueling a trend of innovative, unconventional releases like Kanye West’s ultra minimal album Yeezus. That tradition sticks to West. In 2016, he dropped The Life of Pablo and later spent months tweaking the “living” album. So it’s in this vein that Ye spent his Wednesday (April 18). After unveiling plans for a philosophy book last week, one he said would be called “Break the Simulation,” West, in signature form, flipped the script and streamed it all on Twitter in real time. Forget writing words to a page, West turned a book into a real time event.
“This is my book that I’m writing in real time,” he tweeted. “No publisher or publicist will tell me what to put where or how many pages to write. This is not a financial opportunity this is an innate need to be expressive.” He added, “I will work on this ‘book’ when I feel like it.”
Throughout his (literal) stream of consciousness are signature Kanye-fidence gems, Will Smith-esque affirmations, and all the reasons that make his interviews some of the most searched content online.
Without further adieu, Mr. West and his thoughts…
